The Whitening Process

A pearly-white smile is always in style and can greatly improve self-confidence. Many people are opting for the Zoom teeth whitening system for fast, safe and effective teeth whitening. Zoom whitening has combined dental technology with proven whitening chemicals to make a strong and safe teeth bleaching system. This ensures that the bleaching experience is painless, and the results are satisfying.

Another way people choose to whiten their teeth is with take home bleach trays. Bleach trays are made at the dental office and are worn during the day for 30 minutes. A whitening gel is applied to the trays before placing them in the mouth. The whitening gel covers the teeth as they slowly whiten over time. Apparent changes are perceived over weeks of wearing the whitening trays.

Zoom in-office bleach has many advantages over these other treatments, including:

All teeth treated simultaneously.
Faster treatment times.
Longer lasting results.
Reduced sensitivity.
Safe procedure and treatment.
Treatments are performed by an experienced professional.

Teeth whitening explained

Teeth bleaching lightens the dentin and enamel layers of the teeth. If you could microscopically look at the surface of the tooth you would see the tooth is actually porous. Whitening bleach gel contains a hydrogen peroxide component (25%), which is the active ingredient. When hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth, the peroxide component enters the microscopic tubules and breaks down into tiny oxygen bubbles. These bubbles eliminate yellowing and staining. A specialized light or ingredients can be applied to the teeth which catalyzes the reaction. The teeth and process are completely healthy, as only the surfaces of the teeth are affected.

Whitening results vary on each person due to different types of staining and different porosities of the teeth. Prior to treatment, a cleaning must be performed to adequately remove microscopic debris that will interfere with whitening results.

After whitening care

Teeth are known to slightly lose whitening results over time because factors that cause yellowing are always present. For this reason, at Baseline Dental Practice we make bleach trays with every in-office whitening appointment. These trays can be used for future touch-up whitening. After the Opalescense whitening treatment it is recommended to have excellent tooth care using an anti-sensitivity tooth paste. Also, it is recommended to eat and drink white and clear foods for 24 hours. Teeth are most susceptible to restaining during the first 24-48 hours after treatment. These post-treatment measures will ensure that the smile stays at its whitest for a long time.
